Retailers Argos and Debenhams have become the latest companies to offer pre-Christmas discounts of up to 50% both in-store and online.

Argos said the sale was its largest ever, with more items being sold at half price than ever before. In a statement Argos said: "We are offering customer Christmas savings with the last date for ordering for Christmas delivery until noon on December 22 (on selected lines)."

Debenhams has also launched a five-day sale in the last week before Christmas, offering discounts of up to 50% online and in-store. Debenhams deputy chief executive Michael Sharp said: "These new offers give frugally festive shoppers the last chance to bag a bargain before Christmas."

UK retailers’ pre-Christmas sales have reached record levels, with discounting so far averaging 37% of the full selling price, according to a survey by Ernst & Young.
