Despite all the gloom and doom on the high street, the outlook for online sales looks encouraging. IMRG, which represents the e-retailing industry, is predicting turnover in the last quarter of 2008 to be 15% up on the same period last year.

Director of operations of IMRG David Smith said clothing is selling well online. This week online clothing company ASOS reported a 68% rise in interim profits.

Mr Smith said that growth in online sales has slowed year on year. As late as August it was expected to remain buoyant but sales have slowed since September and growth was 13% in October.

Mr Smith included that consumers welcomed the wider choice on offer online and the ease at which prices can be compared by online comparison sites.
